Adventure Days

‘Adventure Days’ are part of Camp Mohawk’s Short Breaks Programme and are aimed at children and young people with HFA (High Functioning Autism) and AS (Aspergers Syndrome). These respite days occur in all school holidays (with the exception of the Christmas holiday) for 2 age groups; 8 – 13 years and 13 – 25 years. The days typically run from 10am to 4pm.

The aim of these days is to help the young people to gain confidence and self esteem, to make friends and have fun in a secure and supportive environment. Activities often include Laser Mission (like laserquest but outside in the woods), animal workshops, camp fires, archery and wall climbing along with plenty of time to make use of our facilities. Children are partnered into groups and will have a timetable of activities for the day. ‘Adventurers’ are encouraged to take part in all of the activities, but alternatives will be provided if there is something that anyone does not feel comfortable doing.

Although the days are intended to be respite we are happy for parents to stay on site if their child is particularly anxious. Please feel free to discuss this with us if you think it may apply to your child.

The staff ratio on the Adventure Days is approximately 1 member of staff to 2/3 children. The days are not intended for those who need 1:1 supervision, so please do let us know if your child requires 1:1 as this may be possible at extra cost. Some children attend with carers provided by the council or privately, please let us know if this applies to your child.

In order to ease transition into the group and ensure that all young people will have a good day we like to meet every ‘adventurer’ before they attend for the first time. If your child has not attended one of these days before, please book to come and have a chat in plenty of time.

Booking forms typically go out by email 3 to 4 weeks before each day, and demand for places is high, so it is advisable to get on the mailing list 4 weeks prior to an Adventure Day. Places are allocated on a first come, first served basis on receipt of a completed booking form and payment (we ask for a voluntary contribution of £10 per child per day). Your family also needs to be registered with Camp Mohawk to access these days.
